My Trash is Another Man's..... TRASH! (apparently)

I hate garage sales... HATE THEM! Hate the work it takes to put them on... hate that it's always hot and you're stuck outside trying to keep bargain hunters from talking you down from 25 cents to 10 cents. (like it matters... or you even CARE!) Hate that everything you carefully select from "the black hole" (your garage), kiddos suddenly really, really want as soon as they see it on the table priced for 50 cents! So why WHY? WHY?

Well.. for starters I thought the traffic would be awesome since
everyone comes to the Community Yard Sale! It's the happening event of the season. (What? You didn't know that?) Ya... well neither did anyone else! Actually I heard there were crowds of people in the neighborhoods closer to the entrance of the master community. But for my neighborhood... in the back of the bus... not so good. I also thought that I had some really, really good stuff to sell! Good quality! Anybody would want this stuff. (well... anyone except ... ME!) But whatever!

So I worked my butt off getting this thing set up. Tiffany came out to help. And when I say "help", I mean... cook breakfast and lunch for my kids and mostly be stuck inside the house with 11 children.... GOOD TIMES! I think Tiffany got robbed! (Sorry Tiff... I love you!).

So at the end of the day... I had $138.00 in my pocket and LOTS and LOTS of crap that had been hauled out of my garage and was NOT going to be put back in. My dear friend, Deb, gave me a brilliant idea. She says she's just gonna put the crap out on her driveway with a sign that says "FREE!" That's awesome! I'd give someone my $138.00 to take this stuff away. Instead my car is loaded with stuff to haul to Good Will. My car, however, now has a dead battery for the 4th time in 6 weeks! OH... I should get a new battery, you say? Ya.. did that 4 weeks ago and it cost me $143.00. Now it's dead for the 2nd time SINCE getting the new battery. So minivan and it's cargo of precious crap are headed back to dealership tomorrow. This time it's the starter.... wait... wasn't I talking about "pointless garage sale"? How did I switch to "stupid, demon mini-van"? Oh yeah... deployment brain! I keep forgetting... mmmm I want PIE!......

  3. Feeling is definitely mutual here. I can't stand Garage Sales either. And yes, why is it always blistering hot when we have one. I can't stand the ridiculousness of them. Lots of time and energy for not a whole lot of money. I especially can't stand when we finish a garage sale certain extended family members can't bear the thought of dumping the remains at the Goodwill around the corner. "We'll save it for the next garage sale..." What? Next Garage Sale, I will not be having a next garage sale and the point was to rid our life of these items not store them for another annoying experience. Oh wait, one final rant. I also can't stand when certain extended family members won't take an offer from the one and only customer interested in a particular piece of crap because it is "worth" so much more than that. It is worth "nothing" to any of us because we don't want it and now no one will buy it. Ahhhhh, I am so glad to have boycotted future garage sales. Thank you for reminding me how much they annoy me so I won't be persuaded into thinking I am helping said extended family members.

  4. Okay that was a little wordy and I forgot a question mark and a comma in the heat of the moment. You will have to forgive me.

  5. Wait Jen, you're a teacher... I expect more from you in the area of proper punctuation use. Hahaha! Loved your rant... you made me laugh! In the future I WILL NOT put myself through garage sales again. I will just load up the car and head to Good Will! :o)

  6. Plus, as an added bonus, Josh likes to go to the Goodwill once a month looking for stuff he can transform into musical instruments and loves when he comes across some of our crap. "Hey, that's a really cool lookin' shaving cream warmer. I could use one of tho... wait a minute. I did have a shaving cream warmer just like that. Wait, THAT IS MY SHAVING CREAM WARMER, and it's only $1.99. Deal. I'm takin' it!"

  7. Jen... Hahahahahahaha! Okay, THAT made me LAUGH OUT LOUD! Let me get this straight. Josh spends $29.95 on a shaving cream warmer (or get's one for Christmas... or something), doesn't use it, donates it to Goodwill... and then finds it and spends 1.99 to re-purchase it? Seriously? Ok.. that's priceless! I need to see an entire blog on that sort of thing! Ha ha!
